In this workshop we will be creating beautiful digital illustrations ready for colouring inspired by University of Edinburgh (UoE) buildings and the amazing treasures held in the Centre for Research Collections (CRC).

During this one-hour workshop we will introduce both Jupyter notebooks as a medium and the Noteable service as a platform to enable learners to be actively engaged in and learn alongside instructors in both distance and in-person environments.

From geology to literature, genomics to law, academic research is increasingly utilising larger and larger digitised datasets, and with these comes the potential need to use more powerful computers. But how do you decide when to scale up from working solely on your own laptop, and what should you consider in the process?
This short session will cover the key questions to ask yourself, consider what impact increased computing power could have on your day-to-day research workflow, discuss access to shared high-performance computing clusters here at the University of Edinburgh, and provide pointers to where you can go for more help.
User Experience design: What it is and how it can help you?
User experience (or UX) design is an innovative discipline that embraces common design problems and focuses on ways to solve them. It encourages thoughtful digital creation and helps make things easier and better for everyone to use. This session will cover the fundamentals of UX design, show you how to apply them, and illustrate the benefits of working in a user-centred way.
Introduction to Tinkercad
Tinkercad is a free, cloud-saving, browser-based software that is a perfect introduction to 3D modelling for complete beginners. This workshop will run through basic controls and operation, followed by some more advanced tips and tricks – it will also touch on modelling for 3D printing. The session will end with some Q&A time for questions or discussion about your own projects.
Introduction to Inkscape
Inkscape is a free, professional-quality vector graphic design software that is great for creating artwork such as logos, app icons, cartoons, and even more. It can also be used to prepare images for cutting and engraving on the laser cutter.
This introductory workshop will cover what vector graphics are, navigating the interface, using basic tools and creating your own artwork! The session will end with some Q&A time or project discussion.
Introduction to Fusion 360
In this workshop, the basics of 3D modelling using Fusion 360, parametric design, assembly modelling and freeform modelling will be covered at a beginner level. The session will end with some Q&A time for questions or discussion about your own projects.
Introduction to Blender
Blender is a free and open-source software. It is compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux. Blender has a wide range of tools that allow you to model, animate, render and video edit, and because it’s easy to switch between these workflows, it’s a great tool to get started with. It is a good alternative to 3ds Max, MAYA, and Cinema 4D.
In this workshop, you will be familiarised with the interface, shortcuts, and basic operations. By the end of the workshop, you will be able to create basic 3D models of physical objects and render them.
